Choosing to install a deck made of exotic hardwood is a significant investment, which is why proper installation is non-negotiable. Today, our experts will discuss the steps they take to make sure our clients are happy with their new Red Balau decks.
Importance of Acclimatization
Acclimation means allowing the wood to adjust to its surrounding environment before installation. This is especially important for tropical hardwoods like Red Balau. Here are several reasons why:
- Moisture Content: When Red Balau boards are transported to a new location with different humidity levels, they either absorb or release moisture to reach equilibrium with the local environment. Acclimation helps improve the stability of Red Balau boards by minimizing dimensional changes once installed.
- Adhesive Performance: If you plan to use adhesives or sealants during installation, it’s essential to acclimate the Red Balau boards beforehand. Changes in moisture content can affect the adhesion properties of these products, leading to poor bonding and potential failure over time.
Seal Fresh-Cut Ends
Wood fibers, when exposed to the air, can undergo changes in moisture content that lead to swelling or shrinking. This is particularly pronounced at the ends of freshly cut boards, where moisture loss or absorption occurs more rapidly. As the wood fibers expand and contract unevenly, they often result in unsightly and structurally compromising splits.
Sealing the fresh-cut ends of Red Balau boards creates a protective barrier against moisture ingress and egress. Applying a sealant or end grain sealer effectively creates a shield that slows down the rate of moisture exchange between the wood and its environment.
Sufficient Drainage and Ventilation
Proper airflow and drainage underneath and between deck boards help maintain the structural integrity of the deck. Without adequate ventilation, moisture can become trapped, leading to problems such as rot, mold, and decay.
Insufficient drainage can result in standing water, which not only accelerates wood decay but also attracts pests like termites and carpenter ants.
Red Balau is prone to expansion and shrinkage due to changes in moisture levels. During times of high moisture, hardwood decking may expand by as much as 1/8 inch on 6-inch-wide boards and 1/16 inch on 4-inch-wide boards.
Air-dried hardwood decking can shrink laterally by approximately 1/16 inch or more on 4-inch wide boards and up to 1/8 inch or more on 6-inch wide boards.
Kiln-dried boards typically experience less shrinkage.
Do Not Use Nails
Hand-nailing Red Balau boards can easily cause the wood to split, compromising its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
Pneumatic nail guns tend to curve the nail back out of the wood, which not only leads to unsightly protrusions but can also be extremely dangerous due to the density of the wood.
Sealing after Installation Is Mandatory; Finishing Is Not
Sealing is applying a protective coating or treatment to the surface or ends of the wood to prevent moisture ingress or loss and minimize the risk of cracking. Finishing is the application of a coating or stain to enhance the appearance of the wood, such as by adding color or sheen.
While sealing is mandatory for Red Balau boards, finishing is optional and primarily serves aesthetic purposes. Finishing can enhance the natural beauty of the wood, add UV protection, and increase resistance to stains and moisture.
