IPE
Ipe (pronounced as e-pay) is also known as Ironwood, Brazilian Walnut, or Pau Lope, a tropical hardwood coming from the rainforests in Brazil and has become one of the most popular choices in decking industry because of its flawless appearance and strength coming from its natural oils in the grain and high density level with Janka Hardness 3510lbf (vs Redwood 450lbf). And additionally, it is classified as class ‘A’ fire rating, the same rating given to concrete and steel, meaning it is highly resistant to fire too.
As a decking material, Ipe is air dried to around 18% moisture content, before it is milled in South America into deck boards. Ipe has a rich brown color with red and amber hues. Due to its fine texture and interlocking grain, Ipe offers superior slip resistance. Ipe also does not require the usage of preservatives or treatments, and is naturally resistant to a variety of common decking issues, such as decay and rot, insect infestation, and more.
In short, Ipe has the wood quality that people don’t gamble.
